Since qualifying in 2003, Joanne Lee has worked in cardiac nursing. She spent nine years working in the acute coronary care setting in Birmingham before embarking on a career in heart failure.
Joanne joined a community heart failure team in 2016 as a band 6 nurse, managing a case load of patients diagnosed with chronic heart failure. She was then given the opportunity as a band 7 nurse and clinical lead in Sandwell, which is her current role. The role includes managing 18 community heart failure nurses, managing a clinical case load as a non-medical prescriber nurse, as well as providing educational sessions to the wider multidisciplinary team.
She is affiliated with Health Innovation West Midlands for 16 hours per week as a heart failure champion for Birmingham and Solihull. Her role is to upskill clinicians within primary care with the aim of improving detection of heart failure, providing support in the management of heart failure, and advising on the appropriate escalation of heart failure patient care.
As part of her role, she is involved in supporting quality improvement initiatives, in particular, reducing the prevalence of heart failure within primary care networks, and improving heart failure assessments. Joanne also encourages primary care to complete 12‑monthly heart failure assessments.
